يتكوّن الجهاز العصبي في الجسم من جزأين رئيسيين، ولكلٍّ منهما وظائف خاصة به، تساهم في التحكم بالجسم واستجابته للمؤثرات.

الجهاز العصبي المركزي (CNS): يتكوّن من الدماغ والنخاع الشوكي. يقوم بمعالجة المعلومات واتخاذ القرارات، وهو مركز التحكم الرئيسي في الجسم.
الجهاز العصبي الطرفي (PNS): يشمل الأعصاب التي تخرج من الدماغ والنخاع الشوكي إلى بقية أجزاء الجسم. وظيفته نقل الإشارات العصبية من وإلى الجهاز العصبي المركزي.
